Melissa Murphy is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the state of Maryland. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in sociology and gender studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and later obtained her Master of Social Work in clinical behavioral health from the University of Maryland. As a therapist, Melissa’s goal is to guide clients through whatever is keeping them from living their best and happiest lives. She specializes in a strengths-based, trauma-informed perspective, and helps clients develop effective skills and strategies to mitigate anxiety, depression, and trauma symptoms that interfere with their well-being.
Melissa offers clients a safe space to better understand their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. She provides a warm, culturally-sensitive, non-judgmental, and collaborative environment to help clients work through all issues — no matter how big or small— that make their lives less joyful. Melissa has advanced training and experience in a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, conflict resolution, mood disorders, identity issues, emerging adulthood issues, sexual dysfunction, pain experienced with sex, and emotional regulation.
Melissa uses a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), mindfulness, and meditation. She also specializes in couples and sex therapy, and can help clients improve communication and trust, heal from infidelity, resolve intimacy issues, and increase pleasure. Melissa works closely with clients to tailor effective therapeutic approaches to their specific needs.
She has expertise working with adolescents, adults, and couples. Melissa has keen talent and insight for working with individuals who are experiencing chronically challenging issues such as workplace stress, family of origin issues, and the confusion and anxiety that comes with finding a place in the world.
Melissa is a strong LGBTQIA+ ally and has experience working with individuals in open relationships/consensual non-monogamy. She celebrates and warmly welcomes clients of all spiritual beliefs, religious beliefs, ethnic backgrounds, and world views.
