Steven is a nationally certified counselor (NCC) and Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) in Maryland. He is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD). Steven received his master’s degree in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Walden University.

Steven is excited to work with young adults, couples, and families to gain more insight into themselves and their social environment. Steven is an ally to the following communities/groups: LGBTQIA+, open relationships/non-monogamous, sex-positivity, and body positivity. Cultural competence is a leading priority in Steven’s approach to counseling. Steven works with individual clients to better understand interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships. When working with couples, Steven focuses on assisting each partner in finding empathy, validation, and understanding when communicating. Like couples, when Steven works with families, he works on improving communication skills and addressing their presenting issues.

Steven has experience treating clients with mood disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. He has treated clients in the process of grieving and clients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He has treated couples with conflict resolution issues, lack of satisfaction, and infidelity. Steven has also treated families with intergenerational conflicts, triangulation, and insecure attachment issues.

Steven believes in using therapeutic methods that work well with the client(s) personality and presenting issues. He uses the following techniques and theories in session: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), Gottman’s Couple Therapy, Strengths-Based Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Imago Dialogue, and Adlerian therapy. Steven also incorporates the following evidence-based therapy methods as needed: music, art, physical activity, and meditation.

As a therapist, Steven focuses on social connectedness, conflict resolution, coping with stress/trauma, and understanding Self. He believes that a solution-focused and strengths bases approach along with CBT methods can assist individuals, couples, and families with here and now presenting issues. He approaches issues related to the past by exploring family constellations, family niches, level of social support, attachment patterns, and emotional regulation.

Steven provides a collaborative, caring, and non-judgmental approach to treatment. He assists clients in their journeys to better communication, a positive perspective on life, coping with trauma, and resolving conflict.

Steven Savoy is a licensed graduate professional counselor (LGPC) in the state of Maryland working towards his independent clinical professional counselor license (LCPC) under the supervision of Alicia Betran, LCPC.
